ALTERNATIVE HOUSING

Welcome to the Alternative Housing segment at ForMyParentsCare.com, where we explore various types of alternative housing options tailored to meet the unique needs of seniors. As individuals age, they may not be able to stay at home throughout their golden years.  Caring for my Mom, that time came when she was not able to remain at home despite what we kids or my Dad wanted.  Her declining health and ability to support her own weight made it impossible for her to remain in their home.  Finding the right housing arrangement becomes increasingly important to ensure comfort, safety, and quality of life. In this section, we delve into a diverse range of housing solutions.  From assisted living to independent living communities and retirement villages and aging in place initiatives, I aim to provide information and resources to help seniors and their families make informed decisions about their living arrangements.  Keep in mind that different states may offer different communities or housing options and names.  Whether you’re seeking a vibrant community setting, specialized care services, or innovative housing models, I am dedicated to guiding you through the process and exploring the diverse array of options available.

Assisted Living/Independent Living/Continual Care Retirement Communities

Assisted Living/Independent Living/*Continual Care Communities are designed for seniors seeking a vibrant community with shared interests but without the need for personal or medical assistance. They provide a moderate level of care.  Residents often participate in organized events, outings, and social activities, and communal meals. Think of these as the familiar apartment complexes we see every day, except they usually do not have stoves or heated appliances in the units. These communities typically feature apartment-style housing with more than 8 units total.

*While residents may start in independent living, if needed, they may transition to specialized memory care areas in the same complex, often called Continual Care/Memory Care .  These separate areas specialize in the issues of memory, alzheimers and/or dementia and could treat other conditions.  Remaining in the same facility, a resident of this community would still have opportunity to visit any family or friends in the non-memory area, keeping as much familiarity as possible for the resident.  Many facilities allow for small pets depending on the ability of the resident to care for them.  Many offer assistance in the pet’s care, however, this will be an added cost.

These communities cater to both single residents and couples and prioritize resident autonomy and flexibility, as many are licensed and regulated.

55+Communities

Also called Active Adult or Age-Restricted communities, they offer vibrant and fulfilling lifestyles for seniors looking to enjoy their golden years to the fullest. These communities are specifically designed to cater to the needs and interests of individuals aged 55 and older, providing a range of amenities, activities, and services tailored to active and independent living.  Many of these communities require at least one person who is 55 years of age to reside in at least 80% of the occupied units.  These properties are regulated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Fair Housing Act.  (Communities such as Independent Living Communities may be regulated if they accept government funding, ie, Medicaid)

55+ communities typically offer a variety of amenities such as clubhouse facilities, fitness centers, swimming pools, walking trails, social clubs, laundry services, transportation services and group meals, providing residents with ample opportunities for recreation, relaxation, and socialization. Additionally, many communities may offer maintenance-free living options, allowing residents to enjoy a carefree lifestyle without the hassle of home maintenance tasks.  Depending on the resident, pets may be allowed at some communities.

Board & Care Facilities/RCFE (Residential Care for the Elderly)

A Board & Care/Residential Care Facility for the Elderly (RCFE) offers a warm and welcoming environment tailored to the individual needs of seniors who require assistance with ADLs – Activities of Daily Living – bathing, dressing, medication management, meal preparation – but prefer a more intimate setting than traditional assisted living facilities. Most are single-family residential houses which have been upgraded for wheelchair access and security bars in baths and showers amongst other improvements. Most are equipped for 6-8 residents.  With a smaller resident-to-caregiver ratio, residents benefit from individualized attention and support, fostering a sense of belonging and security.

In caring for my parents, I understand the importance of finding a home-like setting where seniors can receive personalized care and support while maintaining their independence and dignity.  My Mom stayed at a beautiful Board & Care managed by the most wonderful family – wife, husband and brother.  We called the facility “The Diggs” as my Dad didn’t like any of the official terms.  “I’m going to go see your mother at ‘The Diggs’ today,” he would tell me.  The family loved my Dad as much as my Mom and were kind enough to feed him as well as her.  She was wheelchair-bound at this time and was unable to remain at home.  This painful transition was, in a small way, comforted by the amazing caregivers at “The Diggs”.

In addition to personalized care, Board & Care RCFEs often offer a variety of amenities and activities (always based on each resident’s ability) to promote socialization, engagement, and overall well-being. From shared common areas and outdoor spaces to organized outings and recreational activities, residents have opportunities to connect with peers and participate in meaningful experiences.  These facilities often have options of a private room versus a shared room depending on the desires of the resident.   Many of these Board & Care RCFEs have resident pets.  Small cats, dogs or birds are the owners/caregivers’ pets and are instrumental in comfort to many residents.

Skilled Nursing/SNF

A Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) provides specialized care and rehabilitation services for individuals who require round-the-clock medical attention or rehabilitation and support due to acute or chronic health conditions. The importance of finding a facility that offers comprehensive medical care and compassionate support to promote healing and recovery is paramount to your loved one’s health.

Skilled Nursing Facilities offer a range of services, including 24-hour nursing care, medication management, wound care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, among others. With a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including registered nurses, licensed therapists, and medical specialists, SNFs are equipped to address a variety of complex medical needs and provide individualized treatment plans tailored to each resident.

At one time or another, both my Mom and Dad were in a Skilled Nursing Facility.  I was fortunate enough to find one very close to my home so I could see them every day and was close enough should any emergency arise.  My Dad even convinced one of the physical therapist to play poker with him in the afternoon.  (I brought extra pretzels for those high-stake games.) 😂

In addition to medical care, SNFs often offer a range of amenities and services to enhance residents’ comfort and well-being. From comfortable accommodations and nutritious meals to recreational activities and social programs, residents have access to a supportive and engaging environment that promotes healing and recovery.

Whether you or a loved one require short-term rehabilitation following a hospital stay or long-term care for chronic medical conditions, a Skilled Nursing Facility offers the comprehensive care and support needed to achieve optimal health and quality of life.

FINANCIAL SERVICES

At ForMyParentsCare.com, I understand the importance of financial security.  I sought financial assistance with my parents regarding their investments and retirement accounts.  As seniors face retirement and even beyond, estate planning, and healthcare expenses, the need for professional financial services can be paramount.  This platform aims to address these needs by offering information to help you connect with trusted financial advisors specializing in elder financial planning.**

Professional financial services for the elderly can offer tailored solutions to help seniors navigate complex financial matter with more confidence.  From retirement income planning and investment management to long-term care insurance and estate planning, these services provide invaluable support in safeguarding seniors’ financial well-being.  (Note that many decisions regarding the finances of your elderly loved one may require legal aspects such as Powers of Attorney.)

When caring for my parents, I had to gather and combine numerous accounts as they were spread amongst different institutions.  Consolidating was arduous but so much easier to manage.  The assistance from financial professionals was very important to both Mom and Dad as they always worried about money and finances.  They were able to be involved and in command of how their accounts were invested.

I am committed to helping seniors and their families get information to make informed decisions about professional financial services and providers so they have resources available to seek the strategies they need to achieve their financial goals and protect their assets.   I am here to help you find professional financial advisors who can help you and your loved one enjoy a secure and fulfilling retirement.

Senior Centers and Adult Day Care Centers

Senior centers and adult day care centers provide essential support and services to older adults, offering a welcoming and nurturing environment where seniors can socialize, engage in meaningful activities, and receive personalized care and assistance outside the home.

Senior centers typically offer a wide range of programs and activities designed to promote physical fitness, cognitive stimulation, and social interaction. From exercise classes and educational workshops to arts and crafts, games, and cultural outings, seniors have the opportunity to stay active, connected, and engaged with their peers. Additionally, many senior centers provide access to supportive services such as transportation assistance, meal programs, health screenings, and information and referral services – for example, many senior centers provide low-to-no-cost tax preparation – helping seniors maintain their independence and quality of life.

Adult day care centers offer a similar range of services and activities, but with the added benefit of providing daytime care and supervision for seniors who may require additional support or assistance. These centers provide a safe and structured environment where seniors can participate in activities tailored to their interests and abilities, while also receiving assistance with personal care, medication management, and other daily tasks as needed. For family caregivers, adult day care centers offer respite and support, allowing them to attend to their own needs and responsibilities while knowing their loved ones are well cared for in a nurturing and stimulating environment.

If you’re looking for opportunities to socialize and stay active at a senior center or seeking daytime care and support for a loved one at an adult day care center, this information is here to provide guidance to help you find the right fit for your needs.

HOME CARE AGENCIES

Home care services offer personalized assistance and support to seniors who wish to remain in the comfort and familiarity of their own homes while receiving the care they need.  The importance of maintaining independence and dignity as individuals age is something with which we can all empathize, and I am committed to providing comprehensive home care information and solutions to meet the unique needs of seniors and their families.

Home care services encompass a wide range of support options designed to address various aspects of daily living and promote overall well-being. From personal care assistance with ADLs – activities of daily livingsuch as bathing, grooming, and dressing to medication management, and meal preparation, some agencies offer light housekeeping and light laundry.  These compassionate caregivers are here to provide the support and assistance seniors need to thrive at home.

My Mom was blessed to have the best in-home caregiver I had ever met.  I called her My Rosie. She grew to love my Mom as if she were her own.  My Rosie was our Monday-Friday, 12-hours-a-day angel 😇🪽sent from heaven.  She bathed my Mom everyday, fixed her hair and makeup and nails, cooked meals (my Dad said she was an amazing cook) put her to bed, gave her all her medications, played music for her, read to her and called me several times a day to give me updates and hold the phone to Mom’s ear so she could hear me – and smile.   I still think of My Rosie and that special place in my heart in which she will always be.

In addition to essential personal care services, home care programs may also include skilled nursing care, therapy services (such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy), and specialized care for individuals with chronic conditions or memory impairment. Ateam of highly trained and qualified professionals can work closely with seniors and their families to develop customized care plans that address their specific needs and preferences.

One of the key benefits of home care services is the flexibility and individualized attention they provide. Unlike institutional care settings, home care allows seniors to receive personalized care in the comfort and privacy of their own homes, where they can maintain their routines, preferences, and independence. Home Care caregivers strive to build trusting relationships with each client, fostering a sense of companionship, security, and dignity.

Whether you’re seeking short-term assistance following a hospital stay, long-term care for chronic conditions, or respite care for family caregivers, home care services can provide the support and assistance you need. With a compassionate approach and commitment to excellence, they are dedicated to helping seniors live their best lives at home, aging in place safely and comfortably, surrounded by the people and things they know and love.

LEGAL SERVICES

As we age, the need for professional legal services becomes increasingly important to ensure our rights and interests are protected.  At ForMyParentsCare.com, I recognize the complexities and challenges that seniors and their caregivers may face when it comes to legal matters.  From estate planning and advanced directives to guardianship, conservatorship, elder abuse issues, andPowers of Attorney, there are various legal considerations that require careful attention and expertise.

When caring for my parents, I needed legal services for many reasons: they wanted to create a trust and have me as Successor Trustee, we needed Powers of Attorney for healthcare, financials and medical and Advanced Directives.  Each hospital required the latest Advanced Directive each time they were in the hospital.  I began the legal process BEFORE any cognitive impairment was even suspected so as not to risk any negative legal actions down the line.  THEIR wishes and requests were made legal.  Later, when they began to decline, I was ever so thankful this work had been completed.

Professional legal services for the elderly offer invaluable support in navigating these complexities and ensuring seniors’ wishes are honored and their assets are safeguarded.  I am dedicated to connecting seniors and their families with reputable legal professionals who specialize in elder law.  **These professionals possess the knowledge and experience to address a wide range of legal issues affecting seniors providing guidance and advocacy every step of the way.

Whether you are seeking assistance with drafting a will, establishing a trust or navigating long-term care planning, professional legal services can offer peace of mind and assurance during life’s transitions.  In my commitment to empowering seniors and their families, I’m here to help you access the legal support you may need to navigate the complexities of aging with confidence and dignity of your loved one.

And remember, some Senior Centers offer professional low-to-no-cost tax, legal, and financial services.
